People are often put off having surgery because they are concerned about the recovery. However, when it comes to rhinoplasty recovery, there is very little to be concerned about. Rhinoplasty recovery time is surprisingly short and if patients are careful, it can be a very easy time.
What Are the Stages of Rhinoplasty Recovery?
For the first day or two after surgery, patients will experience a bit of pain. This is manageable and your surgeon will supply you with some prescription painkillers. Most patients report that by the third day, they are feeling less pain and they can manage it with over-the-counter (non-prescription) painkillers.
For the first week, while the nose is still bandaged and splinted, there will be some bruising and swelling, but by the time you return for your one-week consultation and the splint is removed, most of the swelling will have gone down and you will be able to appreciate the beauty of your new look.
Bear in mind that everybody is different: some people may have more severe reactions to the procedure, while others may experience much less discomfort.
How to Speed Up Recovery After Rhinoplasty
After surgery, be very gentle with your nose. For the first day or two, you won’t even want to splash water on it. It’s advisable to sleep alone in case of being bumped. Keep your head elevated and sleep on your back. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month after the surgery.
Rhinoplasty Recovery Tips Before and After Surgery
It is a good idea to stop smoking at least a few weeks before rhinoplasty (or any surgery) as nicotine slows healing. Do not use aspirin for a few days prior to surgery as this thins the blood.
If you wear spectacles, try and use contact lenses after the surgery or ask your optometrist about strapping your specs to your forehead if you absolutely must use them.
